ILLUMINATIONS by Mary Sharratt is out in paperback!

One of the most extraordinary women of the Middle Ages, Hildegard von Bingen -- Benedictine abbess, healer, composer, saint -- experienced mystic visions from a very young age. Offered by her noble family to the Church at the age of eight, she lived for years in forced silence. But through the study of books and herbs, through music and the kinship of her sisters, Hildegard found her way from a life of submission to a calling that celebrated the divine glories all around us. In this brilliantly researched and insightful novel, Mary Sharratt offers a deeply moving portrait of a woman willing to risk everything for what she believed, a triumphant exploration of the life she might have lived.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: In the 1920s, a scandal in Paris sends a rebellious young woman into the dangers of Africa, where she discovers a beautiful, threatened land and awakens to what is truly worth fighting for-- and what she cannot live without.

DETAILED SYNOPSIS: Paris, 1923: The daughter of a scandalous mother,
Delilah Drummond is already notorious in Paris society. But her latest
scandal is big enough to make even her oft-married mother blanch. Delilah is
exiled to Kenya and her favorite stepfather's savanna manor house until gossip
subsides. Fairlight is the crumbling,
sun-bleached skeleton of a faded African dream, a world where dissolute expats
are bolstered by gin and jazz records, cigarettes and safaris. As mistress of
this wasted estate, Delilah falls into the decadent pleasures of society.

Against the frivolity of her peers,
Ryder White stands in sharp contrast. As foreign to Delilah as Africa, Ryder
becomes her guide to the complex beauty of this unknown world. Giraffes,
buffalo, lions and elephants roam the shores of Lake Wanyama amid swirls of red
dust. Here, life is lush and teeming—yet fleeting and often cheap.

Amidst the wonders—and dangers—of
Africa, Delilah awakes to a land out of all proportion: extremes of heat,
darkness, beauty and joy that cut to her very heart. Only when this sacred
place is profaned by bloodshed does Delilah discover what is truly worth
fighting for—and what she can no longer live without.

From the ashes of war rise the secrets of its darkest hearts. . . .

My Review of THE FORGOTTEN QUEEN

Out Now!

THE FORGOTTEN QUEEN is an engaging and very interesting read. Margaret is vividly portrayed and I felt for her as she struggled with her life in Scotland after her father, Henry VII, married her off to James IV of Scotland at fourteen. She arrives there while still grieving the premature loss of her mother, Elizabeth, and brother, Prince Arthur. Her life as queen of Scotland is not an easy one and an early widowhood thrusts her into the midst of court intrigue and faction as she struggles as regent for her son, James V. Two more marriages, troubles between England and Scotland, and the constant intrigues of her nobles take their toll. D.L.Bogdan gives us an intimate, startling, and sympathetic view of what Margaret's world must have been like. The novel is fast paced and rich in characters that make brief but deeply felt appearances. Margaret, however, remains the focal point throughout and we get to know her well, and to like her. Even if we don't always approve of her decisions, we are always engaged in this wonderful novel. .

My review of THE QUEEN'S VOW.

In this wonderful and superbly-researched novel on Isabella of Castile, C.W. Gortner relates a fascinating story that has not been told before. THE QUEEN'S VOW covers Isabella’s little known childhood and rise to power, and ends as she is about to step onto the world stage in 1492. C.W.Gortner vividly details the choices and sacrifices she made in order to become the queen we know. While nothing comes without cost, and no one is without fault, Isabella’s story is engrossing and we understand how she comes to secure her place in history as a great and triumphant queen.
